...what do the Heat do?

A popular discussion this year has been about the free agency, and the exciting possibilities of having D-Wade return with another superstar. On the flip side, as confident as I am that Wade will be staying after this summer, there is still that small possibility. As much as we might hate to think about it, there is always that worst case scenario that we can't ignore. What's the back up plan?

First, let's take a look at who we know for sure is staying.

Michael Beasley and Daequan Cook both have guaranteed contracts. Chalmers is a cheap pick up for a team option for under a million, and James Jones is way over-priced at 4M for his team option. Joel Anthony is a restricted free agent, and there are also last year's second round picks PG/SG Patrick Beverly and SF Robert Dozier who are currently being developed in the Euroleague, though I'm not sure if they have guaranteed contracts or team options.

If team options are picked up without signings and draft picks, the remaining line up stands as:

PG Mario Chalmers
SG Daequan Cook
SF James Jones
PF Michael Beasley
C Joel Anthony

Bench
Patrick Beverly
Robert Dozier

That kind of reminds me of the good ole days, when the Heat had a year of this legendary line up.

So, considering the worst of the worst of Wade leaving Miami, which would take elite FA possibilities with him, what's plan B? With their two first rounders (I believe they are somewhere between 15th and 20th?), who do they draft? Although the elites like LeBron, Bosh, and Amare may become unavailable without Wade, the Heat do still have a legit amount of money to throw at a few of the many other talents this summer. So who should they go after that would still have a realistic chance of signing?

So, to sum up my question briefly it pretty much goes back to the thread title - what the heck do the Heat do if Wade leaves?

Do everything you can to get Amare, draft two-guards, and throw the rest of your cash out to every two-guard free agent in the league.

I think the Heat have the best chance at getting Amare than any other team in the league, really, so go after him. Wrap him up ASAP, then hope that it attracts other FA's.

The BEST answer is to negotiate a sign-and-trade with Wade, but I'm assuming we're not diving into that.

Not necessary really. I think they'd be better off than say the Cavs if they lose LeBron. The Heat could still win some games with that roster and could still be a playoff contender with a player like Amare or Bosh.

Well we've got 2 picks this year and we'd either be a lottery team or a low playoff team so we'd have a great pick the year after so we'd be better off than either Cleveland or Toronto if they lost their big guys.
