Tracy McGrady would love to play for the 76ers, according to Stephen A. Smith.

Smith wrote a column in the Philadelphia Inquirer on the status of the 76ers, saying they should focus on a high draft pick and forget about winning this season.

"I'd love to finish this season in Philadelphia," McGrady told Smith.

Didn't think he actually WANT to come to Philly at this current stage in his career. Interesting.

McGrady is looking for a way out, and this is a good way to get in good with a team he can "dominate" on, lock up a decent contract, and stay overpaid for a few more years.

Let's just pretend Houston lets him expire, no trade. He walks into the summer of 2010 as a free agent, among one of the most attractive FA classes anyone can remember, probably of all-time. That's a problem for McGrady. What team would want to give him money after he's been sitting at home all season long?

Going to Philly, or any team less likely to make the playoffs or hurting for talent, gives him a chance to put up another 20 or so points per game, look like a rejuvenated player eager to earn that next paycheck, and in his eyes, Philly will have no choice but to re-sign him for more than he could ever get otherwise.

The Heat. They've been keeping tabs on him for a while. If the Heat can't grab LeBron, Joe Johnson, or Chris Bosh, they could be very likely to sign T-Mac to a deal if they feel he's healthy enough to contribute at a high enough level.

Well, sure...but would the Heat give him the deal he could potentially get from Philly if he gets traded before the deadline?

The free agent McGrady, with zero games under his belt in 2010, would get less interest from teams in the NBA, and the Heat could give him a lower offer because of that. His value drops, and Miami wouldn't have to pay as much.

But let's assume he goes to Philly this month. He averages 20/5/5 and plays good basketball. His value increases, and teams would be willing to give him an extra year or two on the deal, extra money, tougher to sign.

It would be ridiculous if Randy decided to pay McGrady big bucks if he doesn't play a single game this season.

I see your point.

At this stage in Tracy's career, though, whether he goes to a team like Philly or not, it's possible that he'll be willing to take a pay cut for a team with realistic championship aspirations. He's made enough money in his career to be more than satisfied financially. He's never made it out of the first round.

How is McGrady going to dominate the offense in Philly? Lol... they can't find enough shots for their players already.

True, but they are going to have to trade players to bring him in...and it will more than likely be Iguodala and Dalembert/Brand.

Houston and Philly won't be dealing.

Chris Broussard: Last month the Sixers would have traded Iguodala for financial relief but now they won't move him unless they get a player of equal or better value.

Not word for word but the gist of it.
