Quote

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- Los Angeles Lakers guard Steve Blake was the unsung hero of his team's first-round series victory over the Denver Nuggets, scoring 19 points in Game 7.

But he learned quickly how a town can turn on him after he missed a potential game-winning 3 in the Lakers' 77-75 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday.

After the game, both the Twitter feeds of Blake and his wife, Kristen, were inundated with criticism ranging from curse word-laden rants to threats.

"I hope your family gets murdered," read one tweet that Kristen Blake re-tweeted along with a single comment: "Wow."

Kristen Blake also mentioned on her Twitter account that she blocked more than 500 people from viewing her timeline and quoted a Bible verse that included the message: "Pray for those who abuse you."

Yesterday was another morning after for LeBron James.

The morning after James played the entire second half, defended every position on the floor except center and collected 28 points, nine rebounds, six steals and five assists, doing all he could to pick up the slack for missing All-Star teammate Chris Bosh and struggling superstar teammate Dwyane Wade, who missed 14 shots, including a potential go-ahead layup in the final minute.

It was also the morning after James missed five free throws, including three that could have tied the game down the stretch; bricked four 3-pointers; and attempted one shot in the final 3 1/2 minutes, a driving layup that was blocked by Paul George.

Lin/Novak & Bird Rights

Anyone else been following this situation? The NBAPA is arguing that a player who is waived and does not negotiate a new contract, but rather is claimed and continues with his old contract, should be treated the same as a player who is traded and retains their bird rights. This would allow the Knicks to re-sign both Lin and Novak to max allowable length contracts for players of their tenure in the league, and would open up the ability to sign other players with their MLE and mini-MLE. It would allow us to chase Felton/Hinrich/Kidd/Miller/Dragic etc as well as some other bench pieces.. to be quite honest, most of the Knicks success next year can ride on the outcome of this.

Billy Hunter:
Quote

'Bird and Early Bird rights are among the most valuable rights that players have under the [collective bargaining agreement]. These rights simply cannot be extinguished in the absence of an affirmative decision by a player to select a team through free agency. We will ask the arbitrator to resolve this dispute on an expedited basis.'

Anyone have any opinions on whether the twosome should retain their Bird Rights?

Dwight Howard was nearly traded to the Houston Rockets

Quote

The 2011-12 season did not go as planned for the Houston Rockets, but the offseason plans remain fairly unchanged.

The Rockets, with cap room, two first round draft picks and a willingness to trade just about anyone, are still in pursuit of that big name, and stop me if you’ve heard this one — a superstar in Orlando has fallen out of favor with the franchise, shut it down as the season neared to a close and will look for a trade in the offseason.

Tracy McGrady ended up in Houston in 2004, and if the Rockets have their way, so would Dwight Howard in 2012.

In March, the Rockets remained steadfast in their willingness to “rent” Howard and stayed involved in talks with the Magic. At the Toyota Center on trade deadline day after the dust cleared, I was told that Rockets GM Daryl Morey was the last one standing in the Howard chase. Weeks later I was informed that when Rockets front office personnel called it a night in the wee hours of the morning of the trade deadline, they believed they were going to land Howard later that day. The 6-foot-11 center reversed course and agreed to not exercise his opt-out clause to become a free agent, instead staying with the Magic for another year.

It wasn’t until this week that we could say it definitively — multiple sources tell ClutchFans that had Dwight not opted in, he was coming to Houston in a trade.

(If I could add here some speculation — while no one has told me this, it’s been my theory since the deadline that the Rockets nearing in on a trade for Howard may have played a role in Dwight’s decision to not opt-out and instead stay an extra year in Orlando. By being traded to a “rental” team like the Rockets at the deadline, any chance of getting the max years and max raises from a team on Howard’s preferred list would have been killed. He either would have to get that from Houston, or take less from someone else — sign-and-trades no longer give the best of both worlds, as they did under the old CBA. By staying another year in Orlando, Howard bought more time to work a trade to a team he chooses. End theory.)

The last thing Houston fans want to hear is another “we were close” story. In their quest for a superstar the last few seasons, the Rockets have mastered the art of the second place finish, executing near-deals and almost-signs with laser-like precision. In 2010 they had a sign-and-trade agreement in place with Toronto for Chris Bosh but forgot to ask Bosh. In 2011 they missed out on Carmelo Anthony, who reportedly had some interest in the Rockets before Yao Ming went down. Later that same year, the Rockets came close to a deal with Utah for Deron Williams.

While it is certainly a positive sign that the Rockets had an offer at the trade deadline that Orlando liked, it doesn’t make it a slam dunk in the summer.

For starters, will Orlando trade Howard? The belief is that if he won’t sign an extension, they will do just that.

Secondly, is he healthy? Howard underwent back surgery to repair a herniated disk on April 20th and may or may not be ready to go at the start of the 2012-13 season.

And lastly, the asking price in March was based on what was left on Howard’s contract — just a month or two, giving his new team an outside shot of re-signing him. Now, the superstar center is under contract for a full year and several other teams could get involved. The draft order will be established later this month and teams that end up in the top 5 that are interested in Howard could have a big advantage — in particular the New Jersey/Brooklyn Nets, who have about a 25% chance of landing a top 3 pick.

However, if the Rockets can successfully pull off the rental, they might finally be able to step off the mediocrity treadmill. Howard is the one player out there that could fill all the Rockets’ needs (superstar, big man, shotblocker, rebounder) and could make Houston an attractive location once again. In January we wrote that Deron Williams was the Rockets top target as they love Deron’s game and believed he could be the lure for Howard or other big names. With Howard staying another year, those roles could flip, with Howard playing the bait. Can you acquire Howard before Deron decides to stay with the Nets or join hometown Dallas? You may not see it now, but behind the scenes a Texas-sized battle is brewing between the Rockets and Mavericks for the same players: The Mavs are trying to build a dynasty while the Rockets are trying to avoid obscurity.

No one wants more empty talk. All of us are tired of the Rockets being “close” and trying to lure superstars that don’t really want to be here, but before discussing trade-ups in the 2012 NBA Draft or which free agent to chase in July, the Rockets will exhaust the slim shot and pursue first the opportunity to get Howard.

5 Reasons Why the Lakers Can Upset the Thunder

Very rusty article, wrote this one right before my final today.

It's been a while since the Los Angeles Lakers have actually been considered the "underdog" in a playoff series, but this year, that is exactly what they are against the young Oklahoma City Thunder.

Kevin Durant, one of the best players in the league, will not be the only concern of the Lakers. They also have to deal with the explosive Russell Westbrook, the finesse sixth man James Harden and even the tough interior presence of Kendrick Perkins.

A shorter season also favors the younger team, which the Thunder are against an older Kobe Bryant and the Lakers.

This, however, does not mean they will lose. Here are five reasons why the Lakers can pull off an upset against the Thunder.

5. Momentum
Sure, the Nuggets gave the Lakers a run for their money by making the series go all the way. But winning Game 7 means a lot to Los Angeles. This gives them not only an emotional win, but a strong one to advance to the next round. They currently have a lot of momentum riding into Game 1 tonight in OKC.

The Thunder, on the other hand, swept the defending champs. They have had over 10 days of rest, but sometimes too much rest is not a good thing. They will start off the series rusty, while the Lakers have the advantage of playing 48 hours ago, going with the flow and using their momentum to their advantage.

4. X-Factors
Metta World Peace is back. He shut down Danilo Gallinari in the pivotal Game 7 versus Denver and looks to do the same against the Thunder.

Getting a harsh suspension from the league after the elbow to Harden will motivate the defensive star. Unlike Barnes, World Peace will take the open three and be more aggressive with it, resulting in more opportunities for him to prove himself on the offensive end.

Steve Blake played well for the Lakers in the last series and is looking solid for them of off the bench. If he keeps up his stellar play, and if Ramon Sessions shows a little bit more experience, the Lakers' "X" factors will also help them upset the Thunder.

3. Experience
The Lakers lost Derek Fisher to the same Thunder that they will be facing, but they still have much more experience.

Kobe Bryant has five championship rings and over hundreds of playoff game experience. Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum have a couple of rings of their own.

Although he is no Phil Jackson, Mike Brown coached the Cleveland Cavaliers deep into the Eastern Conference playoffs and even into the finals.

Matt Barnes has been in the playoffs several times, along with other players on the Lakers roster.

The Thunder are still relatively new to the postseason, though, and they will likely show their lack of experience at times, which will hurt them.

2. Kobe Bryant
Yes, Kobe Bryant is still one of the best players in the NBA today. Having him on your team alone gives you a fighting chance.

This man single-handedly almost beat the Phoenix Suns in the playoffs when his starters included Smush Parker and Kwame Brown.

He showed in Game 7 against Denver that he did not need to score for the Lakers to win, and he can go into his play-making mode to help the team win.

On defense, Bryant can guard either Durant, Westbrook or Harden. Watch for any of those possible matchups.

When needed, Bryant can score at will and hit clutch shots. OKC will have to be on their top defensive game to make Kobe struggle.

1. Size
Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol are the best frontcourt in the NBA when they want to be.

If and when both are motivated and playing at their best, the Lakers are virtually unbeatable. In the crucial Game 7 against Denver, they combined for 20 offensive rebounds and 10 blocks, and they each added over 15 points.

They can handle the paint.

While Perkins has held his own against Bynum in the past, he looks like another type of player this season when he plays to his full potential.

Serge Ibaka will have a tough time guarding Gasol when he gets down low in the paint.

Defensively, Bynum and Gasol should have no problem guarding Perkins and Ibaka with their non-factor offensive games.
